John Fein of Firebrand Ventures
In this episode, Hall interviews John Fein of Firebrand Ventures, a Midwest-oriented venture fund focused on seed-stage software startups. John is an experienced entrepreneur and founder, who got into startup investing with Techstars in Kansas City.
John talks about the importance of meeting with as many founders as possible, learning as much as possible about their backgrounds, businesses, and building relationships. He discusses how he saw an opening in the Midwest, a previously under-served area when it came to startup funding. John also talks about the growth of funding availability in the region, and where that funding is coming from.
John advises that being team-focused and founder-focused, particularly at the seed stage, is vital. He details the qualities Firebrand looks for in a founder, and how it has helped him achieve success. John goes on to discuss some examples of companies hes worked with, and also details some of the particular risks he sees in the area and how he approaches those risks.
